What is LEED?
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used green building certification system in the world, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). While BREEAM dominates in the UK, LEED is the standard for internationally funded projects, multinational corporate developments, and buildings seeking global recognition.
LEED v4.1 is the current version, with certification levels at Certified (40-49 points), Silver (50-59), Gold (60-79), and Platinum (80+). Material-related credits sit primarily within the Materials and Resources (MR) category, which offers up to 13 points.
Materials and Resources credits overview
The MR category rewards projects for reducing the environmental impact of building materials through better sourcing, transparency, and waste management.
Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction - 5 pts
Reuse existing buildings, structures, or materials, or show a 10%+ impact cut via whole-building LCA.
Environmental Product Declarations - 2 pts
At least 20 products with EPDs; product-specific, third-party verified declarations earn the second point.
Sourcing of Raw Materials - 2 pts
Recycled, salvaged, or bio-based content, or FSC/BES 6001 sourcing - 25% of materials by cost.
Material Ingredients - 2 pts
Ingredient transparency via HPDs or Declare labels; further credit for products avoiding chemicals of concern.
Construction & Demolition Waste - 2 pts
Divert 50% (1 pt) or 75% (2 pts) of construction waste from landfill.
Note. LEED v4.1 introduced an alternative compliance path for MR credits using a whole-building LCA approach. This allows projects to demonstrate overall material sustainability performance rather than counting individual products.
Key differences from BREEAM
For UK-based teams more familiar with BREEAM, these are the most important differences in how LEED handles materials.

Tip. Many products that earn BREEAM Mat 01 and Mat 03 credits also qualify for LEED MR credits. If your supply chain already has EPDs and responsible sourcing certifications for a BREEAM project, LEED credit documentation is largely a matter of reformatting.
