A supplier's guide to choosing and earning the right credentials

Why certification matters
Buyers, specifiers, and main contractors are increasingly asked to justify material choices against carbon, biodiversity, and social-value targets. Independent certification is how suppliers prove their claims at the pace procurement teams need.
A credible certification does three things at once: it turns vague 'green' statements into auditable facts, helps you qualify for tenders that require specific standards, and shortens the due-diligence conversation with architects and QSs.
Tip. Certification is a trust shortcut, not a marketing badge. Choose credentials that match the claims buyers actually ask you about.
Map the certification options
Sustainability certifications cluster into four broad groups. Before you invest in any one, work out which group your customers are asking about.
Product attribute schemes
Make a claim about a specific product - FSC, PEFC, Cradle to Cradle, Declare, GreenGuard.
Environmental Product Declarations
Quantified life-cycle data verified to ISO 14025 / EN 15804 - the default answer on embodied carbon.
Management systems
Certify how your business operates - ISO 14001 environment, ISO 50001 energy, ISO 45001 health and safety.
Ethical and social marks
B Corp, Living Wage, Social Enterprise UK, and Fair Trade for relevant inputs.
Choose what your buyers actually ask for
Every certification has a cost and an annual audit cycle. Rather than chasing every badge, work backwards from the questions on tender documents and PQQs you already receive.
- Pull the last 5-10 tender or specification requests you've responded to. List the certifications they named.
- Ask 3 of your best customers which schemes they filter or score by in their procurement platform (e.g. NBS Source, Open Contracting, BREEAM credits).
- Check what your top competitors publish on their spec sheets - parity matters on commodity products, differentiation matters on premium ones.
- Prioritise by the ratio of tender value opened up to annual cost. A £3-5k EPD that supports BREEAM Mat 01 credits can pay back in one project.
Note. If you sell into public-sector or BREEAM-rated projects, an EPD and FSC/PEFC (for wood) or ISO 14001 will cover most of what you are asked for.
Prepare your evidence before you apply
Most first applications fail on documentation, not on performance. Assemble the basics in one folder before you contact any certifier.
- Bill of materials: every input by weight or volume, with supplier name and country of origin.
- Energy and water data: 12-24 months of meter readings for each site, split by fuel type.
- Waste data: tonnes out, destination, and recovery or disposal route.
- Transport: typical distance and mode from each input supplier, and from factory to average customer.
- Packaging: materials, weights, and end-of-life route.
- Chain-of-custody documents from any upstream certified supplier (needed for FSC/PEFC).
- A simple process map showing where raw materials enter, where they are transformed, and where the finished product leaves.
What the process actually looks like
Timelines vary by scheme, but the shape is similar. Plan for 3-9 months from decision to certificate in hand for most first-time applications.

These are rough 2026 market rates for a small-to-mid-sized supplier. Always get three quotes - prices vary widely by product complexity and site count.

Watch out. Beware self-declared or pay-for-a-logo schemes. If there is no third-party verification and public registry, it will not pass procurement due diligence.
Common pitfalls to avoid
Most suppliers hit the same few snags. Knowing them up front saves months.
- Claiming certification at company level when the certificate only covers one product or site - be precise in marketing copy.
- Letting certificates lapse. Put renewal dates in a shared calendar 6 months out.
- Stopping at certification and not updating datasheets, website, and Matera profile with the certificate number and scope.
- Treating the LCA or management system as a one-off consultancy project rather than an internal capability.
- Forgetting scope 3 and supplier data - contractors are increasingly required to report on upstream emissions.
A suggested order for most suppliers
If you are starting from scratch, this sequence tends to deliver the fastest commercial return with the least wasted effort.

Get your house in order
energy, waste, and bill-of-materials data in a spreadsheet.

Commission an EPD for your single highest-volume product. This alone answers most carbon questions on tender.

Add any product-attribute certification your sector expects (FSC/PEFC, Declare, etc.).

Layer ISO 14001 once you have more than one site or more than ~20 staff.

Consider B Corp or similar ethical marks once the operational basics are certified.
