Cradle to Cradle Certification

Cradle to Cradle (C2C) is a product certification that evaluates materials not just for what they do during their useful life, but for what happens before and after. It asks whether a product is made from safe materials, manufactured responsibly, and designed to be reused or safely returned to natural systems.

The certification was developed by chemist Michael Braungart and architect William McDonough, based on the principle that waste should not exist. Instead of minimising harm, C2C pushes manufacturers to design products that are actively beneficial - safe for people, useful for the economy, and restorative for the environment.

C2C certification evaluates products across five categories, each scored independently. The overall certification level is determined by the lowest-scoring category - meaning a product must perform well across all five areas, not just one.

C2C uses five levels that reflect how far a manufacturer has progressed in each category. Higher levels require increasingly rigorous evidence and continuous improvement commitments.

Construction materials spend decades inside buildings where people live and work. C2C's material health assessment directly addresses indoor air quality and occupant wellbeing - something EPDs and carbon metrics do not cover.

The circularity category is equally relevant. Buildings are eventually refurbished or demolished, and C2C-certified products are designed with that future in mind. They are more likely to have take-back programmes, high recycled content, and connections that allow disassembly rather than demolition.

C2C is complementary to other sustainability certifications, not a replacement. Each framework serves a different purpose.

All C2C-certified products are listed in the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Registry, a public database maintained by the C2C Products Innovation Institute. You can search by product name, manufacturer, or category to confirm certification status and level.

When evaluating supplier claims, check the registry directly. The certification mark should include the level (Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum) and the product scope. Some manufacturers certify only specific product lines, not their entire range.
